(Word Limit 600 words for Question No.1 and 2)

1. (a) Critically consider Marlowe’s portrayal of Younger Mortimer in Edward II. 16

(b) Comment on the Marlowe’s treatment of the irony of kingship in Edward II.

2. (a) Comment on the significance of the role of the Athenian artisans in a A Midsummer Night’s Dream with special reference to Nick Bottom. 16

(b) Examine the theme of love in its various dimensions in A Midsummer Night’s Dream.

3. Explain any one of the following with reference to the context. (Word Limit 300 words) 8x1

a) Something still buzzeth in mine ears,

And tells me, is I sleep I never wake;

This fear is what makes me tremble thus;

And therefore tell me, wherefore art thou come?

b) If we shadows have offended,

Think but this, and all is mended,

That you have, but slumber’d here

While these visions did appear

Group-B

4. Write on any two of the following literary terms within 200 words each: 5x2

Catharsis, Dramatic Irony, Hubris, Soliloquy

Group-C

(Word Limit 600 words for Question No.5 and 6)

5. (a) Would you consider the title of Sheridan’s The Rivals an appropriate one? Justify your response. 16

(b) Comment on the role played by any two of the women characters in The Rival.

6. (a) Analyse the Sleepwalking scene (Act V, Sc. i) in Shakespeare’s Macbeth and bring out its dramatic significance. 16

(b) Critically comment on the responses of Macbeth and Banquo to the Witches’ prophecy. 16

7. Explain the following with reference to the context. (Word Limit 350 words) 9x2

a) Naught’s had, all spent,

Where our desire is got with content

‘Tis safer to be that which we destroy

Than by destruction dwell in doubtful joy.

b) I see thee yet, in form as palpable

As this which now I draw

Thou marshall’st me the way that I was going;

And such an instrument I was to use–

c) It is not to be wondered at, ma’am; all that is the natural consequence of teaching girls to read. Had I a thousand daughters, by Heaven! I’d soon have them taught the black art as their alphabet!

d) Well, Sir, since you are so bent on it, the sooner the better; -- let it be this evening--- here, by the Spring---- Gardens. --- We shall scarcely be interrupted.
