How to study English Honours Under Calcutta University

After a long drawn battle against the odds a student gets an admission in English Honours in any college of Kolkata.
And then another struggle starts- "How to study ?".
Yes, this is the problem.
  • TASK ONE: SYLLABUS
Now the first and foremost task for any student is to get hold of the "SYLLABUS". It can be easily downloaded from the Calcutta University Website.

To download the English Honours Syllabus for free; kindly click here.

Once you had reached the syllabus webpage; kindly click on the second option.

That is "English" of course.
Very soon a pdf file will be shown on the screen. Now I would simply ask you the give a right click of your mouse and click on "save as" option. You can also download the same thing from my blog in the downloads bar.

What next?

A student sees a carefully detailed syllabus which takes the wind out of him.
He feels "there is so much to study". If you look it closely you will find that its far too short and simple than your school syllabus where you had to study 10 to 12 chapters in each and every book for your board exams.

A student must set or prepare a way to get through the situation like this.
You will find that in the First year syllabus itself there is so much to study like the 'History of Literature', Philology, Poems, Sonnets, Literary Terms, two books namely- Rape of the Lock and the Paradise Lost.
But if all these are taken as different subjects just as in school wouldn't it make it easier. Just buckle up yourself and smile.

Don't worry!
At the present moment I would like you all to go through your detailed syllabus and buy the books as prescribed by the University. The best place to buy these books is as always the College Street in Kolkata. Make sure you buy the Guide version of these books. Only 'Text' version would be of no help to you.
If still you have any problems then kindly take help of your college teachers or seniors.

Remember this syllabus acts as a map around which you have to build your studies pattern.

Word Limit
Word Limit is introduced by the Calcutta University in 2010. It sets the limit of words which are to be used by the student while answering the questions. Word Limit doesn't count the 'Articles' & 'Punctuation'. It is very helpful. You will soon realize it during the examination. Without the word limit you would end up wasting your four hours on only half the Paper. Kindly keep in mind the word limits prescribed by the University and abide by it strictly.
